I am blessed with a wonderful mother
I never feel insecure or alone
I always feel her comforting embrace
Although it’s years since I am grown and out on my own
I know today we are supposed to celebrate mothers
But I would like to expand the honoree list
To include all the women in my life
Who without their love, I probably could not exist
In a woman’s soul lies the giving trait
That makes it easy for her to hold out a hand
She brings encouragement to those who stumble and fall
Compassion and love whenever there is demand
To be a mother does not require a birth
Each of us is a mother in some sense of the word
For a woman’s heart is in tune with those around her
Ready to nurture and comfort when the call is heard
For all the women in my life
Who answer to mother, sister, aunt or friend
I honor you today, for it is Woman’s Day
A celebration of the love on which I can always depend
