Beware of sympathy, it can be deceptive
It offers temporary comfort, but then tries to stick around
It makes us believe we need its existence
In its embrace, many of us will lose our footing and drown
How easy it is to attach to sympathy
It will turn into self-pity if we give it room
It will seep into our hearts and sap our spirit
It will paint a vivid picture of hopelessness and doom
Self-pity is an addicting drug
So much mileage we get out of any challenge we face
The world sees us as weak and struggling to survive
No one expects us to try; no dream we need to chase
In life, we will all deserve some sympathy
It gets us through inevitable pain and despair
But sympathy that lingers becomes dangerous self-pity
It will kill our relationships and the dreams we share
Turn your back on the convenience of self- pity
Open your heart and mind to possibilities instead
When we reject pain and turn our thoughts to the future
Our lives see promise and we find a sense of purpose instead
