I have seen it happen so many times
Discouragement takes over a heart
A soul that once danced with joy
Becomes wounded and falls apart
These wounds become self- inflicted
No matter what trial has brought on the pain
We choose to give up on life and ourselves
We choose to block the sun and let in the rain
It is true that life is not always pleasant
Challenges can sap the strength from our bones
But that is when we have to dig in our heels
Bring on the smiles and abandon the groans
Even the smallest and most timid of smiles
Says we are not ready to concede defeat
It may take time, but we are not giving up
We will fight on; we will not retreat
There will always be wounds that pierce our souls
There will always be wounds that are so hard to bear
But one little smile can give us the strength
To never give up or give in to despair
