Comfort is a wonderful gift
But we should not let it become our constant friend
Comfort works best when we offer it to others
Helping to make their troubles end
Too much comfort can become a habit
An addiction too difficult to break
Comfort can become a dangerous crutch
Giving us the excuse to hold onto our heartache
When we give comfort, we learn a valuable lesson
That our grief is not a permanent state
The sheltering embraces we long to receive
Can be given back so that another’s pain may abate
When we reach out to offer comfort
A door to our souls opens wide
We see our own troubles fading away
And we can make the pain in others subside
