I grew up in the Italian culture
Where guilt is a staple of everyday life
My Jewish friend said we were barely rank amateurs
And took me home to meet the source of her daily strife

Whoa! That was an eye awakening experience
We both admitted- to say the least
Until we ran into our Irish friend
whose guilt had grown into a monster - a truly horrific beast

Every culture claims to be the champion of guilt
We wear the moniker with a weird sense of pride
How much better would our lives be
If we let guilt go and tossed it aside?

I say we make a worldwide pledge
And vow not to make guilt a family friend
Sure, it’s a cheap way to get people to do what we want
But it only sows seeds of resentment in the end

Instead of guilt, let’s try a little understanding
Let’s bring patience into the equation
Family and friends will respond out of love
Not a twisted sense of forced obligation

So begone, Guilt; take a hike
You are not welcome in the world anymore
We will not pander to your unhealthy presence
An your debilitating power we will finally ignore
